RIOT-002

The RIOT-002 is an environment sensing board which monitors ambient temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, illuminance, and acceleration. The information it transmits with its Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can be displayed on smartphones or tablets where an application programmed for it is installed.

The RIOT-002 contains our power management ICs for energy harvesters, ultra-low current consumption, and low noise and achieves independent power generation, prolongation of battery operating time, and high-accuracy sensing, all of which IoT edge devices require. In addition, customers can select one of three types of small lithium-ion secondary batteries, which can make it easy to develop new IoT edge devices and contributes to shortening the construction period of those devices.

Features

  • Charging from Photovoltaic Panel to Secondary Battery

The R1801, a buck DC/DC switching regulator for energy harvesters, extracts electric power from an indoor-use photovoltaic panel. The product has a maximum power point control function to configure a voltage at which a photovoltaic panel can produce its maximum power, and therefore optimizes the amount of photovoltaic power generation. In addition, a reverse current protection prevents charging loss.
The R1801 has a maximum power point control function, an output voltage adjustment function, and a Power Good (PG) function, and has the following features.

    • Capability to precisely adjust the charging voltage of a secondary battery and the maximum power point control voltage of an indoor-use photovoltaic panel
    • Improvement of operational stability by designing the system to supply power to sensors and communication units after a discharged secondary battery is charged to a certain voltage level.
  • High-efficiency and Battery Monitoring with Low Current Consumption

The RP605, a buck-boost DC/DC switching regulator with ultra-low current consumption, supplies electricity for an MCU, BLE, and sensors, which contributes to achieving a high-efficiency operation at both standby and active modes. The wide operating voltage from 1.8 V to 5.5 V also enables the board to make efficient use of the secondary battery power.

One of the conventional ways of monitoring battery voltage is to input divided voltage to the ADC of an MCU by using resistor dividers. However, this circuit structure enlarges current consumption of the board. By using a power supply IC with a battery monitor assist function, it can be easily monitored with low current consumption. The RP605 described above has this battery monitor assist function.

  • Maintenance-free Operation

When fully charged, the secondary battery can continue to operate the RIoT environment sensing board for approximately one day or more. (A theoretical value.) Connecting a photovoltaic panel suitable for the specifications of the RIoT board enables maintenance-free operation. Each board is equipped with the following secondary battery respectively.

    • RIOT-002A: NICHICON CORPORATION, SLB series (0.35 mAh)
    • RIOT-002B: Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., CT04120 (3 mAh)
    • RIOT-002C: NGK Insulators, Ltd., EnerCera®-ET series (4 mAh)*

    * The EnerCera-ET series manufactured by NGK Insulators, Ltd. is mounted on a separate board of EnerCera® (RIoT2 EnerCera® Board). In case of selecting EnerCera-ET series, use the main board of RIOT-002 (RIoT2 Main Board) without secondary battery and a separate board of EnerCera® (RIoT2 EnerCera® Board). Refer to the specifications of the RIOT-002C for connection methods of these boards.
Note) EnerCera® is a registered trademark of NGK Insulators, Ltd.

  • Available for Customization Using Dedicated Application

The RIoT2 EnerCera® Board is a board designed for the secondary battery EnerCera® and connects to the main board of the RIOT-002 (RIoT2 Main Board) which is not equipped with a secondary battery. This board has a chip-type ceramic secondary battery, EnerCera® ET series of ET1210C-H, manufactured by NGK and is used in connection with the main board of the RIOT-002 which is not equipped with a secondary battery. Both boards can be connected to each other easily thanks to the connectors mounted on both boards for interconnection. Both boards can also be screwed together. * (* Screws not included.)

The ET1210C-H mounted on this board is charged from a photovoltaic panel connected to the main board of the RIOT-002 (RIoT2 Main Board). An optional board (RIOT-C02) that can charge the ET1210C-H from a CR2032 coin battery is also available. It is also possible to charge the ET1210C-H mounted on this board by connecting to this optional board. (Refer to the specifications of the RIOT-C02 for information on how to charge the battery using the RIOT-C02)

RIOT-C02: Coin Battery Board for Environment Sensing Board RIOT-002

The RIOT-C02 is a coin battery board designed for the environment sensing board RIOT-002. By using a CR2032-type battery, the RIOT-002 can continue its sensing operation for 1 year and a half. (A theoretical value.) Before using the main board of the RIOT-002 (RIoT2 Main Board) or the secondary battery EnerCera® board (RIoT2 EnerCera® Board), the secondary batteries on these boards must be charged because the batteries are not charged at all when you get the boards.
By connecting the coin battery board RIOT-C02, charging time to a secondary battery can be shortened compared to when using a photovoltaic panel. It is easy to connect the coin battery board RIOT-C02, the main board of the RIOT-002 (RIoT2 Main Board), and the secondary battery EnerCera® board (RIoT2 EnerCera® Board) mutually thanks to a pair of connectors mounted on them respectively.

How to Insert a Coin Battery

The RIOT-C02 has a claw to fix a coin battery. When you attach a coin battery to the RIOT-C02, insert it at a slant below the claw and push the opposite side softly. Note that other ways of inserting a coin battery may damage the claw on the board.
