New Release of the NP8700 Series, a Quad Channel Combination Regulator—Contributes to Downsizing of Automotive Camera Modules

Nisshinbo Micro Devices Inc. released the NP8700, a power management IC (PMIC) for automotive camera modules.

In recent years, automotive camera modules have been used for various in-vehicle applications, such as driver monitoring systems, rear seat reminders, and gesture controls. As a result, demand for these camera modules is increasing. These modules are installed in tight spaces, such as interior roofs, mirrors, and consoles. Therefore, downsizing and thinning are strongly required.
This product integrates four regulators into a single package to overcome this challenge. Furthermore, it contributes to reducing peripheral components and saving board space by incorporating a standalone sequence setting function and a power-good function, which eliminates the need for reset ICs.
The four regulators built into this product cover a wide range of specifications required for camera modules.

  • Ch.1: Medium voltage (operating voltage: 20 V), output current: 1.2 A, synchronous buck converter
  • Ch.2: Low voltage (operating voltage: 5.5 V), output current: 1.0 A, synchronous buck converter
  • Ch.3: Low voltage (operating voltage: 5.5 V), selectable regulator (output current: 1.0 A, synchronous buck converter OR output current: 0.2 A, LDO)
  • Ch.4: Low voltage (operating voltage: 5.5 V), output current: 0.2 A, LDO (It can be operated as an HS-SWITCH if required.)

Additionally, it incorporates anti-phase control, which shifts the switching phase of Ch.2 and Ch.3 with respect to Ch.1 and spread spectrum frequency modulation that disperses noise. These effectively suppress noise, contributing to improved image quality and operational stability of camera modules.

Features

1. Integration of Power Supplies Optimized for Automotive Camera Modules into a Single Package

It provides four power supply lines required for CMOS sensors and peripheral control in one package. LDO outputs can be selected for applications requiring low noise. This stabilizes the camera module's image quality and signal integrity, enabling higher accuracy and more reliable operation.

System Configuration

2. Significantly Improved Usability Compared to the Conventional NJW4750

The buck regulator for Ch.1 in the conventional NJW4750 uses diode rectification. In contrast, one in the NP8700 adopts synchronous rectification, which reduces the number of external components required. Furthermore, the output current specifications have been enhanced, allowing for a wider range of applications. Additionally, improved EMI performance through spread spectrum frequency modulation, as well as support for shutdown sequence settings, offers greater design flexibility and ease of use.
