Biodiversity Environment

As a member of the Nisshinbo Group, the Nisshinbo Micro Devices Group upholds the “Business Conduct Guidelines,” which emphasizes awareness of and consideration for environmental impact. We strive to deepen our understanding of biodiversity protection, promote biodiversity conservation activities, and sincerely work to realize a safe and secure society for all people. Our group has set the enhancement of biodiversity conservation activities as part of its environmental goals, and we manage KPIs to implement measures in a planned manner.

Examples of Activities by the Nisshinbo Micro Devices Group

Planting of Kerria along the Shingashi River

In 2019, at the Kawagoe Plant of Nisshinbo Micro Devices Inc., we collaborated with the Specified Nonprofit Organization Fun’un Fujimin no Sato to plant 250 Kerria shrubs along the riverside promenade near our facility on the Shingashi River. Today, the shrubs have grown tall, and every mid-April, their bright yellow flowers bloom all at once, beautifully coloring the riverside landscape. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, while the remaining thickets provide habitats for wild birds and small animals, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. Through activities such as tree planting and cleaning around the riverbanks, our company is committed to conserving the local natural environment. We will continue to work in partnership with the community to contribute to creating a sustainable environment.

Conservation Activities for Native Fujibakama

At the Yashiro Plant of Nisshinbo Micro Devices Inc., we are engaged in “Conservation Activities for Native Fujibakama” as part of our efforts to contribute to biodiversity preservation. Fujibakama is a plant the population of which has declined due to riverbank reinforcement and levee construction, and it is now at risk of extinction. At the Yashiro Plant, we have received seedlings of this valuable native species and are cultivating and conserving them with the aim of maintaining the ecosystem of the Kakogawa river system and protecting genetic diversity as a native species.

Inagawa Clean-Up Operation – Regional Ecosystem Conservation Activity

Nisshinbo Micro Devices Inc. Ikeda Office participated in the “Inagawa Clean-Up Operation” as part of its regional ecosystem conservation efforts. The Inagawa River flows near our plant and lies on the border between Osaka Prefecture and Hyogo Prefecture. On the day of the event, employees and their families worked together to clean up the riverbank, collecting a large amount of waste. Among the collected items, plastic debris—likely degraded by ultraviolet rays—was particularly noticeable, highlighting the potential environmental issues caused when such waste flows into the ocean. This activity provided an opportunity to deepen understanding of marine plastic pollution and proved to be a meaningful experience for all participants.

Environmental Conservation Activities at Kashibaru Wetland

At Nisshinbo Micro Devices AT Co., Ltd., we carried out wetland conservation activities including “leaf removal” and reinforcement work on slopes damaged by heavy rain (“sandbag making”). The Kashibaru Wetland, located in central Saga Prefecture at an elevation of about 590 meters, is one of Kyushu’s most important natural environments, home to many rare plants and animals. However, since the late 1950s, surrounding forests have been left unmanaged after logging, and the growth of trees has begun to affect the wetland. Specifically, the following issues have arisen:

  • Accumulation of fallen leaves and branches hinders the growth of small plants
  • Excess nutrients flow into the wetland, disrupting the ecological balance

This conservation activity began in 2017 and reached its eighth year in 2024. We will continue these efforts to protect the valuable wetland ecosystem through ongoing environmental conservation activities.

Environmental Conservation Activity to Enrich Ecosystems: Check Dam Construction

Nisshinbo Micro Devices (Thailand) Co., Ltd. participates in environmental conservation activities organized by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). These activities take place in the forested area upstream of the Huai Khun Nam River in Makua Chae, Mueang District, Lamphun Province, where we work together with local government agencies and community residents to plant trees and build check dams. The check dams are constructed mainly from natural materials such as bamboo and stones in small streams (with a maximum width of about 3 meters) flowing down the mountain behind the industrial estate. By slowing the flow of water, these dams help enrich the ecosystem. They provide habitats for aquatic organisms and create water pools that serve as drinking spots for forest animals—such as deer, elephants, and wild birds—even during the dry season when rivers tend to dry up. Furthermore, during droughts, these water reserves can also be used as domestic water by local villagers.
