Is there any IC applicable for protecting a 48 V battery pack (12 or 15 cells connected in series)? What should I take into account to use the IC?
Lithium-ion Battery Protection ICsHow to use
The R5432 series and the R5436 series are applicable for protecting a 48 V battery pack.
These ICs monitor up to 5 cells in a single chip, and connecting 3 pieces in cascade achieves protection for a Li-ion battery of 12- or 15-series cells, thanks to their cascade connection feature. While the R5432 series has no thermal protection, the R5436 series has one using an external NTC. In addition, we provide information on typical circuit patterns for batteries containing 12- to 15-series cells on the datasheet of the R5436 series (refer to PP.43-46).
When you treat high current, please pay attention enough to the current limit configuration under over-current protection, and conduct sufficient evaluations of such as FET damage by heating at short-circuit states.
Particularly, pay full attention when using FETs in parallel. When FET damage by heating occurs when evaluating opreation under a short-circuit state, adding a resistor between DOUT terminal and the gate of the FET on the discharge side may improve the problem by delaying the FET closing timing.
