What is the role of the zener diode, D101, at the photovoltaic panel input of the RIOT-002?

The zener diode is used as a overvoltage clamp to protect the R1801 from the input voltage higher than its absolute voltage when the photovoltaic panel outputs the open-circuit voltage. It has a zener voltage of around 5.5V.
