Ricoh Electronic Devices, Co. has launched the R1271 Series, a new high-input-voltage buck DC/DC switching regulator suitable for use in automotive and industrial products.

The R1271 series has a wide input voltage range of 3.6 V to 30 V and can correspond to maximum 42 V input, which makes it possible for the new IC to receive its source voltage directly from an battery for automobiles or an power supply of industrial products. Also, it features high output voltage accuracy of ±1.0%, so the R1271 can be useful for various automotive applications such as ADAS, body control systems, infotainment systems, meter cluster panels, etc.

For phase compensation and output monitoring, the R1271 series has built-in feedback resistors and therefore can achieve those functions with the smallest number of external components. Besides, its high switching frequency of 2 MHz lets the IC to use a inductor with small inductance of 2.2 μH. These features contribute to downsizing mounting area.

The new DC/DC switching regulator also includes other “easy-to-use” features such as a duty-over function to maintain output voltage by reducing its oscillator frequency automatically in case of cranking at the engine’s startup, and a spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) function to reduce electromagnetic noise.

Two packages are prepared for the R1271: DFN3030-12B, a small leadless package adopting a “wettable flank” for visual inspection of the soldering joint; HSOP-18 (under development), an easy-to-mount lead-pin type package.

1. Reducing External Components and Inductor Size to Downsize Mounting Area

Built-in feedback resistors for phase compensation and output monitoring enable the R1271 series to operate these functions with the smallest number of external components. Also, this IC can adopt an inductor with small inductance of 2.2 μH thanks to its 2 MHz switching frequency. These features contribute to downsizing mounting area.

2. Duty-over Function to Maintain Output Voltage against Cranking

Input voltage drop caused by such as cranking decreases the output voltage of a DC/DC switching regulator due to the input and output voltages difference. The R1271 series, however, can maintain its output voltage thanks to its duty-over function which reduces the difference between the input and output voltages to the minimum by automatically reducing the switching frequency (Minimum: 1/4).

3. Spread Spectrum Clock Generator to Reduce EMI Noise

Automobiles these days contain various communication systems composed of high-functionality electronic devices. Each of these communication systems may affect or be affected by others by emitting or receiving noise, so reduction of peak noise generated must be taken into consideration. With its SSCG function which suppress peak noise by spreading the noise energy, the R1271 series contributes to taking measures against electromagnetic interference (diffusion rate: Typ. +10%).

4. Small Leadless Package Preventing Short between Adjacent Pins

The pin configuration of small DFN3030-12B package (3 mm x 3 mm) is designed to prevent short between adjacent pins, which contributes to further safety design. Furthermore, this package adopts a “wettable flank” for visual inspection of the soldering joint. Also, the HSOP-18, a lead-pin-type package, is being developed.
